Hand Carved Grouse Lagopus Lagopus Scoticus or the red grouse is not, in fact, red at all but a flecked brownish colour, ideally suited for camouflage on its natural upland moors where it feeds on heather. Threatened by raptors and vermin such as stoats and foxes who prey on the young birds and eggs, the grouse has recently been battling another threat called heather beetle which destroys its food source. This excellent model of a grouse is superbly executed in tiger ironstone. The unmistakable stance of the bird is well portrayed and the carver has made full use of the striations in the ironstone to do justice to his subject.
